Don't bet on a Ronaldo return or Bale bid by Manchester United

Manchester United have been linked with huge bids this summer for either Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo or Tottenham’s Gareth Bale.

There is no doubt United’s current crop of wingers haven’t really made the grade this term, whether through lack of form, fitness or a combination of both.

Nani looks likely to depart from Old Trafford this summer, whilst Ryan Giggs is approaching his 40th birthday and will likely not play much part in United’s season next time around. Even so, he’s hardly got the legs to be deployed as the traditional left-winger he is.

Meanwhile, both Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have had their injury woes this term as well as last and will have their work cut out to convince manager Sir Alex Ferguson that either one of them presents a genuine threat going forward.

Whilst there’s no doubt Red Devils fans would jump for joy at the prospect of Ronaldo retuning, I can’t imagine that Ferguson would be so retrospective in his plans.

The Scot has always looked ahead to the future, balancing the veteran old boys with the new generation with such precision that I doubt there’s anyone in the business who ‘breeds’ stars like Ferguson.

Then there’s Gareth Bale but firstly Tottenham would be very reluctant to sell their double PFA Player of the Year to another English club – if he goes, he’ll go abroad and, at any rate, United already have plenty of players competing for places on the left flank – Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, and Shinji Kagawa can all cover that position.

What Ferguson really needs is a feisty young right-winger and it just so happens he’s already bought one – Crystal Palace youngster Wilfried Zaha will be on his way to make his introduction to the Premier League next term and, in him United have a future world-class winger and potentially striker already within their ranks.

Whilst United fans may want to see Ferguson splash the cash this summer, I doubt he will be buying too many additional wingers so I would rule out the possibility of him signing Bale or Ronaldo – they simply don’t need them.

If he buys a winger at all, he’ll likely go for Porto’s James Rodriguez and that’ll be that.
