Do Manchester United keep Rooney on his toes - Or show their commitment?

Wayne Rooney

Fresh reports are surfacing suggesting Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wants talks with Sir Alex Ferguson about next season.

Worry not United fans, there is a very simple way that Sir Alex Ferguson can keep Rooney at Old Trafford and keep him very happy as they look to get him tied down on a new deal.

The effect Robin Van Persie has had in the attack of the side this season suggests that it could be Rooney under pressure if United are the team that have already agreed a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski.

That is not something Rooney will be used to because he has always been one of the first choice players in the current United team.

The simple way Ferguson can keep him happy is something he’s already revealed as a secret to his managerial career; constant praise and reassurance. The boss has shown no signs that he wants to get rid of Rooney and long may that continue.

That reassurance needs to come in two ways; Rooney’s position in the team and his role at the club.

It seems a much more viable option for United to rotate other strikers around Rooney as opposed to rotating him around Van Persie and whoever else is brought in to improve the attack.

The only reason it seems Van Persie has recently been favoured ahead of Rooney in the attack is because of a little fatigue setting in for the English striker and also because of weakness in the midfield.

If Ferguson has no plans to bring in another striker this season, then it’s very important that he makes that clear to Rooney from a very early point because that will go a long way to easing any concerns the striker has over his own position.

Ferguson is more than likely ready to give Rooney more responsibility in the current team, because he’s going to be one of the older and more experienced players in the side next year.

That may sound a little odd because he’s only 27-years-old but giving him the captaincy when certain players aren’t available and other extra levels of responsibility sends him a clear message.

That message is that he’s an immensely valuable player to the club both on and off the field and if Rooney feels more responsible for the team and club, it makes it easier for him to stay fully committed to the cause.

United also need to send him a message in the form of a new contract, with his current one expiring in the summer of 2015.

That is the ultimate show of commitment from United and something which tells Rooney United are very serious about keeping him and using him, regardless of who they bring in during the summer transfer window.
