Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Wayne Rooney could depart from the champions this summer, according to The Guardian.
Ferguson revealed his plans to develop his ‘solid core’ of young players before suggesting that 27-year-old Rooney is ‘hitting his peak.’
“You have to look at the structure of the club at present, in terms of the number of first-team players we have at 23 or under,” stated the boss.
“Wayne Rooney is hitting his peak at 27.”
Meanwhile, The Telegraph are asserting that Ferguson is ‘confident’ United can ‘compete’ with the big spenders in this summer’s transfer window.
The quote the Scot as stating:
"We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive.”
However, based on the very same quote, The Independent chose the opposite angle, asserting that Ferguson has ‘admitted’ United ‘can’t compete’ with Chelsea and Manchester City this summer.
Meanwhile, United are reportedly planning a partnership deal with Dutch giants Ajax which would see a number of Red Devils’ youngsters and future prospects loaned to the Eredivisie outfit where they could potentially develop and improve.
United youngster Phil Jones believes he can become the ‘complete player’ at United.
“It was good to be in the thick of it in midfield. I enjoy playing, whether it was right-back, centre-back or in midfield,” said Jones.
“I want to add goalscoring to my game. Scoring goals is probably something I need to work on. Hopefully, I can get one before the end of the season.”
In transfer news, ESPN are reporting that United are ‘readying’ a massive summer bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, based on reports earlier this week in The Sun.
United are also linked with a ‘raid’ on David Henen of Anderlecht who is hailed as one of the most promising youngsters on the continent.
Elsewhere, speculation persists that United will attempt to sign Asmir Begovic from Stoke City this summer, as a possible replacement for Anders Lindegaard.
