Arsenal involved in most laughable summer transfer rumour so far

Iker Casillas

Will Iker Casillas really switch Real Madrid for Arsenal? Not if the future of this ex-Chelsea man goes the way as expected.

This weekend, whilst perusing the web for transfer tittle-tattle, I came across an extraordinary headline from a certain news source that made a sensational transfer rumour claim.

The rumour in question regarded Arsenal’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper as they prepare for the departure of Lukasz Fabianski and are clearly not sold on the talents of his Polish compatriot Wojciech Szczesny.

Such a situation has seen them linked with numerous candidates most of which are more than plausible; but this most recent link perhaps pushed the boat out too far.

‘Arsenal target Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas’.

What a signing that would be. Undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers in Europe for the past decade or so Casillas would bring class, experience and above all ability to the sticks at Arsenal.

But looking past the fact I simply cannot see him ever joining Arsenal the real question is how credible is the basis of his exit claims; after all they are based on a bust-up he had with a manager quite clearly on his way out of The Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho and Casillas have barely seen eye-to-eye in the past year and in the end the Spanish number one was dropped for the hapless Antonio Adan in January. Then when Casillas broke his hand Mourinho had his chance; he brought in Diego Lopez.

A capable understudy he has had some impressive turn-outs since arriving in the capital however nobody expected Mourinho to stick with him upon the custodian’s return; apart from Casillas perhaps.

The well-publicised spat with Casillas alienated Mourinho to the Madridista. Casillas is one of their own and as the number one goalkeeper for the best national team in the game Hispano patriotism dictates firmly against a Portuguese manager relegating him in such a way.

If a choice had to be made by the fans between Mourinho or Casillas be in no doubt how they would choose; the Special One would not feel so exceptional when he is asked to pack his things into a hard-box and walk out the front door.

Mourinho knows that club president Florentino Perez is just the figurehead for the Madrid mob and at the end of the day Casillas must stay until his talents have surpassed him; that is the rule of thumb for Real Madrid’s most popular and talismanic characters.

So with Mourinho on his way out this summer the new manager will not want to divide opinion amongst the Merengues rabble quite like Mourinho did; in the end you cannot win.

Casillas will immediately be instilled as the rightful number one again and any talk of an exit will be long forgotten.

As far as transfer rumours go this must be the most passable yet as the mill churns into its active summer groove.

In short; Arsenal fans should not expect to see Iker Casillas at The Emirates anytime soon.
