Tottenham Hotspur weekend round-up: Including Soldado and Baines interest

All the news from the past 48 hours at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham managed to salvage a late point against Wigan this weekend despite being behind until late in the day. Gareth Bale opened the scoring with a fortunate goal early on after goalkeeper Joel nonchalantly chipped the ball into his raised foot which deflected into the net.

However goals from Emmerson Boyce and Callum McManaman soon had Wigan in the lead. In the final moments of the game however Boyce went from hero to villain after putting the ball into his own net.

Before the game Andre Villas Boas was speaking about the future of his team’s best assets including Gareth Bale. The Portuguese boss believes qualifying for the Champions League is imperative as incentive to keep the clubs best players.

The Sunday People believe that Spurs are ready to make a bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines should they qualify for the Champions League. The attacking full-back could be available for as little £12 million and the lure of European football as Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s replacement may be enough to convince the England international.

Spurs have also been linked with a move for Valencia forward Roberto Soldado. The former Real Madrid man has been in good form recently and a team of Tottenham staff took in the Valencia match with Real Sociedad in San Sebastian last night to run the rule over the 27-year-old who has scored 22 goals this season and could be sold to help alleviate the clubs financial problems.

Tottenham forward Gareth Bale is considered the favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award tonight. The Welshman has been in fine form this term and faces competition from the likes of Luis Suarez, Robin Van Persie and Juan Mata.
