Chelsea: What was Nathan Ake up to last night?

Young Chelsea ace Nathan Ake was not involved in the club's Europa League tie, and was instead with the under-21s.

He was one of the star's of Chelsea's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Rubin Kazan; but as Chelsea lined up against FC Basel in the Europa League last night he was nowhere to be seen.

From a starter, to not even getting a place on the bench, Ake was left behind in England as Rafa Benitez picked his squad to travel to Switzerland.

Chelsea prevailed 2-1 thanks to a David Luiz stoppage time winner, but if anyone was wondering what Ake was up to last night instead, we have the answer.

He was part of Chelsea's under-21 side which traveled to Everton, for a tough encounter against a side which had already won the Group One section of the competition.

If Ake was hoping to be distracted from his disappointment at missing out on the Europa League squad, he may have been feeling a little underwhelmed at the end of the afternoon.

The game had actually kicked-off early and Ake was likely on his return to London by time the game in Basel began, but he will have been reflecting on a none-too-exciting 0-0 draw.

Everton's impressive side kept Chelsea's own young talents busy, but neither side could break the deadlock after two halves, with the game petering out to a draw.

Ake played an hour before being substituted, brought off for 17-year-old Jonathan Muleba.

The game won't have meant much, but his selection in it is a reminder to Ake that he isn't quite there yet despite the impressive strides he has made over the past few months.

It is not completely out of the question he gets another chance in the second leg against Basel at Stamford Bridge, given Rafa Benitez' often unpredictable selections.

If he does get an opportunity he will be extra keen to take it and try to ensure he does not miss out on many more big first team games.
