The future of Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao looks like being the talking point of the close season.
For now the player, his club and his suggested suitors are keeping tight-lipped about any possible move.
And although Chelsea are reportedly in the box-seat for his signature, this is a saga that will almost certainly drag on and on.
The 22-year-old is the latest Colombian forward to make waves in Europe, and the reports from Marca suggest that Muriel is also attracting interest from Juventus, AC Milan and Napoli, the latter club possibly seeking a replacement for the potentially Premier League-bound Edinson Cavani.
Of course Atletico could sign Muriel to partner rather than replace his countryman, but anything that suggests Falcao’s transfer is imminent will be deemed newsworthy in the coming months.
Muriel could prove to be an astute signing for the Spanish club. But the fact that he signed a five-year contract at the start of this season will ensure any transfer fee is a considerable one.
Serse Cosmi, his coach while on loan at Lecce, said, “He’s a pure talent…and he’s very similar to Ronaldo.”
The Ronaldo in question was the former Brazilian striker rather than Real Madrid’s Portuguese maestro, but it remained praise of the highest order.
Dynamic and devastating when on form, Muriel could be the perfect replacement should Falcao do what the world’s media is predicting.
Perhaps Atletico are as unsure as the rest of us. But the signing of Muriel would go some way to filling the hole, just in case.
Is Atletico's interest in Muriel a sign that Falcao is heading to the Premier League?
