Aston Villa latest: Including Sunderland build-up and Lowton future

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

All of the latest Aston Villa news to come straight out of Villa Park.

Paul Lambert has revealed his side will be going all out for a win against Sunderland this Monday. Lambert has described it as a match that Villa simply have to win in their bid to stay in the Premier League, against a side on the up under Paolo Di Canio after consecutive wins.

Paul Lambert is sweating over the fitness of full back Joe Bennett ahead of Monday’s match against Sunderland. The left back was replaced late in the defeat away to Manchester United, which has seen him struggling with a knock all week in the build up to the match.

Arsenal have become the latest side linked with serious interest in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. The Gunners could go head-to-head in a battle with Tottenham Hotspur to land the striker at the end of the season, if Villa fail in their efforts to stay in the Premier League.

Paul Lambert has urged every single Aston Villa supporter to get behind the team for Monday’s clash against Sunderland. Lambert says the fans could make the difference and he wants home advantage to count, regardless of Sunderland’s 3-0 win away at Newcastle United.

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar has revealed his relief that the side were not thrashed against Manchester United. Vlaar was in the defence as Aston Villa lost 3-0 away at Old Trafford in a score line which could have mirrored the massive defeat away to Chelsea earlier in the season.

Fulham have become the latest side to be linked with a summer move for Aston Villa’s Matt Lowton. The right back has been one of the most consistent players for the team this season, which has seen links with Arsenal, and now Fulham, appearing on a regular basis.

Paul Lambert has reiterated his belief that Aston Villa will not be relegated this season. Villa’s 3-0 defeat away to Manchester United means they are likely to be in the fight at the bottom of the league right down to the last weekend of the season but he’s confident they can avoid the worst.

Villa captain Ron Vlaar has urged his teammates to keep one eye on goal difference as they continue their quest to stay in the Premier League. The captain has pointed out the importance of goal difference with Villa on minus 27, a worse ratio that Wigan below them and Newcastle above them.

Paul Lambert has praised Karim El Ahmadi following his impact against Manchester United. The forward has been inconsistently used this season but Lambert has confirmed he’s in contention for a starting role in the relegation six pointer against Sunderland this Monday.
