Was Luis Suarez bite worse than ex-Manchester City player 'assault'?

Luis Suarez Bite

Luis Suarez has been banned for ten games; two more than the FA imposed on Ben Thatcher after his elbow on Pedro Mendes in 2006.

Luis Suarez has been handed a 10-match-ban by the Football Association after the disciplinary panel discussed the matter of his bite on Branislav Ivanovic this weekend gone.

The official statement from The FA reads:

‘Luis Suarez has been suspended for a total of ten matches after an Independent Regulatory Commission today ruled on a charge of violent conduct.

A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission today upheld The FA’s claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect.

This follows an incident with Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic in Sunday’s fixture at Anfield.’

I am now about to do something I never thought I would. I am about to defend Luis Suarez.

First of all of course I am not defending what he did. Biting Ivanovic in the way he did was a truly deplorable act and I agree that a three-game-ban was not in fact sufficient. In fact in my opinion 10 games sounds just about right.

But in terms of consistency it certainly is not.

First of all there is the Jermain Defoe precedent. When he bit Javier Mascherano in 2006 he was booked and no further action could be taken under the FA’s bizarre rules. If it could you can be sure he would not have got off lightly so I do not see the point in that argument.

But when I looked through some of the previous lengthy bans one really caught my eye below the 10-game stint Suarez will have to stay on the side-lines.

Eight games: Manchester City's Ben Thatcher for elbowing Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes in 2006 (coincidentally Thatcher was also only booked but the FA DID take retrospective action).

In terms of individual incidents there is absolutely no way anybody can say the bite was worse than this ‘assault’ by the Welsh international (viewable just as Song 2-Blur begins)

What it tells you is just how much the FA have taken into account his previous misdemeanours. His past punishment for biting in Holland on top of his ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra would not have helped his cause.

But should this have come into consideration or should he just have been treated on the incident alone. If the latter is true then ten games is harsh if Thatcher only got eight.

Do you think ten games is too harsh?
