VIDEO: Chelsea and Manchester City target scores inexcusable own-goal

Romania

Steaua Bucharest centre-back Vlad Chiriches has been linked with the Premier League giants along with Real Madrid and Zenit this season. But on this evidence we do not know why?

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Zenit St Petersburg and now Manchester City; that is quite an admirable list of reportedly interested parties but according to the agent Victor Becali he has a client who has indeed been attracting the keen interest of such illustrious clubs this season.

The player in question is Romanian centre back Vlad Chiriches and considering his form this season it is hard to argue against the potential scouting from foreign clubs.

He has been in sensational form this term with Romanian powerhouse Steaua Bucharest on both a domestic and continental front.

Chelsea have been the side most strongly linked with the 23-year-old Romanian international and they should know all about the former Benfica trainee after facing off against him twice in the Europa League this campaign.

It is in Europe’s plate competition where he has truly excelled. His overhead kick against Molde in the Group Stage and his long-range effort against Ajax in the knockouts belied his apparent defensive duties; I think it is safe to say the composed central defender is more in the mould of David Luiz than John Terry.

He also grabbed a goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge; scrambling the ball over the line as the Romanian side gave the European Champions a scare in front of their own fans.

However it appears that perhaps some of that attacking mentality has got him into a spot of bother last night.

Steaua are well clear of the chasing pack, 15 points clear to be precise, and are just in the process of dotting the I and T in Bucuresti on the Romanian title for a 24th time in their illustrious history although this will be their first title win in seven years; their longest wait for a title since the 1970’s.

So the Monday home tie against Europa League chasing Petrolul Ploiesti was supposed to be a walk in the park on their way to Romanian dominance.

However the formerly Bucharest based side had other ideas under the coaching tutelage of former AC Milan and West Brom defender Cosmin Contra.

They managed to snatch a late equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw with the champions elect at the National Arena last night but only courtesy of a rather silly own goal from our very own transfer rumour favourite Vlad Chiriches.

For his and his agents sake let’s hope this isn’t the YouTube video Roman Abramovich clicks
