A massive crowd saw Tottenham’s Under-21 side beat Arsenal in the North London derby, which sparked a unique celebration.
Tottenham have been hailed as having one of the best youth setups in England this season, which was demonstrated as their Under-21 side edge a cagey affair against Arsenal.
Spurs won the match 1-0 in front of a crowd of well over 1,000 fans, heavily in favour of Spurs, who produced a unique shoe related celebration following Nabil Bentaleb’s winner.
The shoes came off and were lifted into the air to chants of ‘shoes off if you love Tottenham’ creating a hostile atmosphere which Arsenal’s youngsters just didn’t seem able to adjust to.
You can’t really blame the Spurs fans who have been made to endure years of watching their main rivals win various pieces of silverware even going a whole season unbeaten.
So even in the greater context of the Tottenham and Arsenal rivalry, Spurs’ supporters will take any excuse to stick it to the Gunners regardless of whether that’s Under-21 level, senior level or in a game of park football.
Tottenham’s youngsters now have an eight point lead in the Under-21 Premier League Elite Group as they have consistently played well against the youth teams of all the big sides throughout the season.
For the senior sides it’s another example of Spurs getting one over on their arch enemies, with the youngsters simply adding to the euphoria which could be generated at the end of the season if Spurs stay in the top four.
The results of the Under-21 side should be very encouraging for Andre Villas-Boas who may be mulling over the current crop of talent, viewing who may be the next teenager to make the step up to first team level.
If Spurs win their game on hand on Arsenal in the race for the top four, they will replace the Gunners and will want that to remain a constant throughout the rest of the season.
What better way to stick it to your rivals than have your Under-21 side beat them on their way to a title and have the senior side secure European football at their expense.
