What can Liverpool do about Luis Suarez?

Luis Suarez Free Kick V Zenit

Liverpool fan Mal James asks the question on everybody's lips...

Some of the fans ringing in to Radio Merseyside were predictably 'blind' to the completely unacceptable behaviour of Luis Suarez. Their argument? That the incident would be blown out of all proportion by a media which always seeks to vilify him.

To those who seek to defend Suarez, an obvious question is "Would you respond in the same way if this had been a Manchester United player? If Evra had bitten someone, would you seek to find justification or reasons to look the other way?"

No, these same people would be screaming for blood.

When people start finding excuses for such behaviour simply because the player involved plays for the team they support, then they are defending the indefensible. Suarez has tarnished his own name, not the media. His guilt in the Evra incident might be open to question, but his reputation for cheating in other ways is media hype. It is the result of antics such as diving.

And before some people argue he isn't the only one who dives, let me remind them that this is not the first time he has bitten another player. This should have been a situation of "Once bitten (or perhaps 'biter'), twice shy." It wasn't, he has done it again.

Perhaps those who seek to defend him should consider that Suarez has put the club in a no-win situation.

Liverpool is a respected Worldwide brand. If the club does not respond and totally condemn him, then it will seem to be defending him, and that reputation will be tarnished . And how will sponsors view it? They will have no wish to be associated with a club associated with cheating and biting. It could end up costing the club money from current and potential future sponsors.

However, if Liverpool does (rightly) condemn him, then this makes it more likely he will leave in summer. But how significantly will this incident affect his possible transfer fee? I suspect it may be lower than it otherwise should be. And consider the effects of selling him on future Champions' league ambitions.

Either way, Luis Suarez could end up costing the club financially and/or in terms of reputation.

It isn't the media that as created this situation. It is Luis Suarez.
