VIDEO: Spanish based Arsenal target in Gangnam Style injury mystery

The craze we hate to love is also apparently more harmful than we think.

Let’s face it, in a few years we will look back and wonder what on earth we were thinking. We will realise it wasn’t cool. It wasn’t corny-in-a-good-way. It was just wrong.

When our children or grandchildren ask, “What’s Gangnam Style?” we’ll have a flashback to the last time we did it and quickly change the subject.

But the irony is that a craze that has swelled predominantly due to Youtube has been immortalised in countless ways on that very same platform.

That is what Valencia defender Adil Rami has discovered to his cost after an impromptu performance of the dance led to a controversy surrounding missed games and a mystery foot injury.

Reports in Spanish newspaper Marca suggest Rami was allowed to appear at a benefit concert having picked up a foot injury in the side’s previous match against Valladolid. But it is unlikely the club expected him to strut his stuff in a video that has now been viewed nearly 100,000 times.

When the French defender then missed Valencia’s next match due to a recurrence of the same injury, contrasting reports suggested the foot had either become infected or the player had ruled himself out.

His on-stage antics do not appear to have been particularly exerting. But the lesson is a simple one:

Don’t do a silly dance in front of people with camera phones in between two matches for which you were apparently injured.

Reports earlier this year suggested that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is tracking Rami closely.

It is no secret that the Gunners need defensive reinforcements. But whether Rami’s latest performance has done more harm than good is yet to be seen.

The player has since returned to the first team, appearing in Valencia’s 5-1 win against Malaga on Saturday.
