As reports continue about Falcao's future, the truth is we are no wiser than we were a week ago.
Or to be more specific, the player himself had spoken.
And his words – as they so often are when headlines are more important than facts – were interpreted as an assertion that he definitely, completely, hand-on-heart would not be a United player next season.
Some outlets said the Colombian had rejected United, others that he had dampened the link. While in quite an impressive feat, his “dismissal” of United had subconsciously intimated a preference for Chelsea.
You can fill quite a lot of column inches and dashboards with headlines like that.
So what did Falcao actually say? How brutally did he refute the Old Trafford connection?
“In recent weeks I have tried to isolate myself and not think about the rumours about my future,” he told Colombian radio station RCN.
“I do not really know where that information has come from,” he continued in reference to the United reports.
“I’m focused only on Atletico Madrid. I do not let the market rumours affect my performance.”
Well there it is: emphatic evidence that Falcao has ruled out any possible move to the red half of Manchester.
Or…well…he didn’t, did he?
So the truth is we are none the wiser, which is exactly as it should be.
At this stage of the season a player should be focused on his current club. He should be brushing away transfer speculation, not because it is false but because it is a short-term irrelevance.
So United fans shouldn’t be disheartened and Chelsea fans shouldn’t be elated. We are no closer to finding out where the 27-year-old will be playing his football next season.
When that is revealed, it will be a headline worth reading.
What do you think of Falcao's comments? And where do you think he will be playing next season?
