Nothing is yet settled in the Premier League, but Arsenal’s superb form over the past few weeks have edged them ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea as the favourites to secure a top four place and Champions League football for next season.
Wherever they finish, a significant transfer window beckons, with Arsene Wenger reportedly ready to spend to reinforce the side after perhaps his most difficult season in charge at the Emirates. If they can get a Champions League place, then signing the players required to improve their side will be all the easier, and Julian Draxler would be a superb move for Arsenal if they could pull it off.
There has been plenty of talk about Mario Gotze, but with the Dortmund player valued at around £30million, and likely to sign a new deal at the German side, Arsenal are unlikely to be able to bring him to the Premier League. But Draxler is also a superb young talent, and his performances for Schalke since the turn of the year have been fantastic.
Lewis Holtby’s move to Tottenham Hotspur allowed Draxler to move into a central role behind the striker, and he has been excellent in that position, scoring four goals and setting up another in nine appearances.
His finishing and dribbling are excellent, and he poses a direct threat from midfield that Arsenal have sometimes lacked in the centre this year.
With Draxler becoming so integral to Schalke since Holtby’s departure, the German side will be loathe to let him leave this summer, but a bid of around £15million could be enough to convince them to let him go. However even then the players own admission over an interest in playing for Real Madrid is another stumbling block entirely.
At 19, Draxler is still developing, but the talent he has already shown suggests he could make a big impact on Arsenal’s team next season. Arsene Wenger will know that even if they finish in the top four this season, there are significant problems with his squad that need addressing, and Draxler would be a fine place to start.
