It could be just out of friendship, one mate going to see another which is understandable as Essien is currently in London recovering from a knock he picked up while playing for Real Madrid.
Essien and Frimpong are two likeable and high profile characters, probably enjoying a bit of banter over a beer, a game of FIFA and reminiscing about better days when they both played regularly for big London clubs.
However, there could be something else to the visit. Maybe Frimpong is making a subtle attempt to urge Essien to join the Gunners this summer. Not beyond the realms of possibility considering Arsenal do need a midfield enforcer.
There is another option and it could be to do with Fulham, who Frimpong is being tipped to sign for permanently at the end of the season.
The pair could have settled down into a nice game of FIFA, chatting about how great life is in West London. Essien’s not first choice at Chelsea any more, but wait, he could join Fulham if he doesn’t want to move homes.
It’s the Arsenal option which is most intriguing here because the Gunners could do a lot worse than firstly, getting Frimpong to commit to a new contract with the club and secondly, getting him to sound out Essien over a possible summer move.
Essien’s Chelsea future does of course depend on who is named as the successor to Rafael Benitez but if this season is anything to go by then he’s done with his career at the European champions.
The Gunners could afford him, as he’s got two years left on his contract, he’s 30-years-old and they reportedly have £70 million in the bank to spend this summer. However, if his mate is popping round to have cosy little chats and catch ups then it could all be mute if Frimpong isn’t kept on at the Gunners.
Would Essien be a good capture for Arsenal?
