PICTURE: Chelsea’s new kit; Cue the Smurf jokes

Chelsea have released interesting marketing pictures of their kit for the 2013/2014 season.

It’s official! Chelsea have a new kit for the 2013/2014 season, which is, well… exactly the same as the one they’re using at the moment.

The promo pictures are out which sees four of the club’s best players; David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Fernando Torres and Oscar showing off the ‘new’ design.

For some reason I can’t quite fathom, they have also dipped their limbs in blue paint which means plenty of neutrals all over England and Europe, will more than likely be thinking up the best smurf related jokes to apply to the news.

So what’s the point if it hasn’t really changed? Well it’s a marketing ploy by the club, to shift more shirts and bring in some extra cash through the merchandising revenue stream.

It’s a common tactic by clubs to release new shirts each season, regardless of whether they have really changed, because the die hard fans want the latest kit which means pounds for the club.

In a way it’s never been more important considering clubs are going to have to think outside the box to try and get more cash in, due to the strict financial controls which apply to the English game.

To be honest, it would have been just as effective, if not funnier, to have a variety of David Luiz poses with the new kit because he always brings some laughs to the table, regardless of the subject matter.
