You remember Salomon Kalou? The Chelsea forward who occasionally popped up with an important goal, but generally made to bask in the glory of Didier Drogba’s shadow.
He’s been trying out life in Ligue One which doesn’t seem to have gone the way he’s planned and that could be a reason for his apparent willingness to get back to London as quickly as possible.
Arsenal are the side that want him if you believe the reports and despite his eight goals and five assists in 22 league matches this season, it would not be a good move for the club.
Kalou struggled during his previous spell in the Premier League and it’s not just because of how good Drogba was, it was because he never showed any consistency in a Chelsea shirt when he was given a chance to play.
Arsenal have money in the bank to spend this summer and money which should be splurged on a much higher profile target who has the ability to drag Arsenal forward when the fight on all fronts next year.
The fact Kalou has three years left on his current contract suggests he could cost a fair whack of money, which could be better used by the club elsewhere.
His position is the overpowering reason it would be counter productive for Arsenal to bring him into the club.
He would want to play as a centre forward, which means he’d have to join the queue behind Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott who have both been asking to play there for so long, it’s become synonymous with their Arsenal careers.
Kalou’s presence at the club would most likely be as a right winger, which would release Walcott to go and play in that striker role but then the Gunners would just be replacing a wide man who wants to play up front with a wide man who wants to play up front.
The size issue also means it could be a very bad move because if Arsenal make any additions to their midfield this summer, it has to be bringing in someone who is going to add power and protection to the middle of their team.
Arsenal are using a lot of smaller players in the middle at the moment; Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey, Kalou would add nothing in a physical sense which those three players don’t already provide.
He could do a job at the Emirates Stadium but the point is Arsenal need something in a new signing which they don’t already have and the core skills, which Kalou would bring to the table are skills that the side already possesses.
Arsene Wenger has said all along he won’t sign players unless they are better or offer something different from the stars he already has.
Arsenal fans, do you want to see him signed up?
