Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on the 21-year-old winger, and might make a move this summer as they aim to add depth to their flanks.
Whilst many Tottenham Hotspur fans will be hoping that their club's business with Porto this summer involves the purchase of Joao Moutinho, the midfielder is not the only talented player who might be available at the end of the season, and Christian Atsu is apparently also on Andre Villas-Boas' radar as he looks to strengthen his squad.
The 21 year old winger will have only one year left on his contract at the Portuguese club come the summer, and Porto might be prepared to cash in on Atsu rather than let him leave on a free in 2014.
The Ghanaian was given his debut at the club by Villas-Boas during his time there, and with Spurs' reliance on Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale demonstrated by their recent travails without the injured duo, the Portuguese manager will surely look to add more options to his team this summer.
Atsu predominantly plays on the left side, a position that Spurs might need to fill now Gareth Bale is regularly playing in a more central role. The 21 year old can also cover on the right side, and adding him to the returning Andros Townsend would give Spurs some real depth on the flanks for the first time in several seasons.
Spurs apparently tried to sign Atsu last summer, but baulked at the quoted figure of £12million. With the Ghanaian entering the final year of his contract, Porto might be willing to lower their terms to nearer £8million, but the Portuguese club have shown themselves to be handy negotiators in the past few years, and Daniel Levy will not find it easy to pick up Atsu in a cut price deal.
Porto are also attempting to sign Atsu up to a new deal, which would probably kill any chance of a transfer this summer. However if he is available to Villas-Boas’ team at the end of the season, Atsu would be a smart signing that could help shore up a vital position in the Spurs squad.
