Could Liverpool be about to make a move for the next Raphael Varane?
With one young French centre-back making waves at Real Madrid this season, another has been catching the eye of the top clubs over the past 18 months, and that's Kurt Zouma.
The 18-year-old plays for Ligue One's surprise package St Etienne, who lie in fourth, and has made 15 appearances so far this season.
He actually broke onto the scene last season as a 17-year-old, playing for the first team 24 times and scoring twice, so while this season has been a little tougher for him, it is easy to recognise he is a very talented prospect.
Zouma has previously been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea, but French magazine Le10Sport are now suggesting Liverpool as a potential destination for the player.
He is a France under-19 international, also eligible to play for the Central African Republic, and is widely tipped to emulate Varane and pull on a senior Les Bleus shirt.
He is value at anywhere between £5 million and £10 million, and St Etienne would be open to letting him go at the right price because they recognise he is a saleable asset and they have two very good defensive options in Moustafa Sall and Loic Perrin.
For Liverpool he would be an interesting signing, not the finished article by all means, but if the club are as expected likely to move on Sebastian Coates as a reserve centre-half, then Zouma is a good option as a replacement.
Brendan Rodgers is busy amassing talent and building a squad for the future, having a proven track record of working with young players at Chelsea, handing chances to several teenagers early this season.
With Carragher retiring as well as uncertainty over Skrtel's future, centre-back is definitely a position Liverpool need to strengthen, and if this report proves to be true it could turn out to be a good deal for the Reds.
