Famed developer plays “what if” with beloved franchise
Making it clear to fans that he wasn't working on the next game and that this was an intellectual exercise, Gilbert outlined plans that would see the title return to hard gameplay and simpler, retro graphics.
“It would be a retro game that harkened back to Monkey Island 1 and 2. I'd do it as "enhanced low-res". Nice crisp retro art, but augmented by the hardware we have today,” he explained on his blog.
“I would want the game to be how we all remember Monkey Island.”
Saying that it would be a “hardcore adventure game”, Gilbert explained there would be little pandering to the gamer, with no tutorials, simplistic puzzles or hints system for difficult brainteasers.
However, the only way he would return to this series is if he owned the IP, but would allow fans to make homages, and would make it as a direct sequel to Monkey Island 1 & 2, ignoring all other titles in the franchise that he had no direct involvement with.
The former Double Fine developer concluded: “The game would be the game I wanted to make.”
