Liverpool should consider blowing their budget on Micah Richards

If Liverpool do only have £20 million to spend this summer, then they should consider spending it all on Micah Richards.

Micah Richards has unfortunately been out injured for most of this season, which has seen him replaced in the Manchester City team by Pablo Zabaleta in a twist of fate which could push him away from Eastlands.

Liverpool are the perfect example of a high profile club with a need for a defender of his quality with just about the level of resources available to go and pull it off if Brendan Rodgers decides that’s who he wants to sign.

Richards has two years left on his current deal with Manchester City meaning Liverpool must act quickly to get their man before negotiations over an extended contract can begin.

Richards is a very good defensively minded player who could cover for Glen Johnson at right back and fill that central position which is being opened up by the retirement of Jamie Carragher at the end of the season.

Richards has the all round game to fit in with the way Liverpool currently play their football and his skill in possession and in terms of feeding the midfield, make him the exact sort of defender the club will be looking for this summer.

He’s also extremely quick which is significant because that’s one of the things the defender replacing Carragher has to offer the team, as it allows Liverpool to play a higher line and maintain their pressure on the opposition.

He will also be very beneficial in terms of rubbing off on the younger and inexperienced members in the Liverpool squad because he can identify with their situation.

Richards made his way into the City first team at a very young age so he can empathise with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Suso and Jordan Ibe and help them to become more effective players in the first team.

It will be difficult for Liverpool to pull off this sort of move because City have been very good to Richards while he’s been injured this season and he’s not expressed a key desire to leave the club.

Liverpool could do a lot worse than using Rodgers as their figurehead if they want to go after Richards because of the praise he’s been getting from the rest of the Liverpool team, for what he’s trying to achieve.

If there is anyone who can convince Richards to become part of the project at the club then it’s the person trying to pull all of the strings.

Richards probably wouldn’t be priced at the £20 million mark but more likely within the region of £15 million, which leaves Liverpool a little room to breathe.

You have to factor in that there will be other bids coming into the equation from other sides, if Liverpool are given permission to speak to the right back during the summer transfer window.

That could push the price up to the £20 million mark, which reduces the amount of room Liverpool have to manoeuvre but in terms of the players they could go out and get, there is no better ready made, experienced Premier League defender out there.

How do you think Richards would fit in at Liverpool?
