Alex McCarthy may have played himself into a Liverpool transfer

Giant Anfield Flag

Brendan Rodgers has described Reading’s Alex McCarthy as ‘simply the best’ following his performance over the weekend.

If Liverpool are on the hunt for a goalkeeper this summer then Brendan Rodgers has just given away his biggest hint that it could be Alex McCarthy of Reading.

McCarthy was in superb form during the 0-0 draw with Liverpool, which left Rodgers plucking his memory to try and find a better example of a more complete goalkeeping performance.

There are still some rumours suggesting that current Liverpool number one Pepe Reina will walk away from the club this summer, which opens up a big opportunity for the person coming in if Liverpool are forced into replacing him.

Based on this, Liverpool may even go after him regardless and their chances of doing so will be helped by the fact that Reading are almost certain to go back down to the Championship.

His price will decrease because Reading cannot justify asking a higher fee because he’s a year further into his current contract and they are not a Premier League team.

That helps Liverpool because all of the reports and stories have suggested that they don’t have tens of millions to spend in the summer, but will be forced into looking for more good value transfers.

If that happens then Liverpool, and possibly some other Premier League clubs, will turn their attention to trying to sign McCarthy who seems to be very comfortable at Premier League level.

McCarthy certainly has the shot stopping ability to perform admirably in the Liverpool number one role and at 23-years-old he still has plenty of time to develop the other areas of his game.

It seems to have been the all round manner of his game, which has impressed Rodgers the most and would be the biggest positive to Liverpool signing him.

His all round command of the penalty area is superb and something which allows him to take control and release the pressure from the defence, which is important against some of the bigger teams he’s played against.

He also seems to be very composed and calm in high pressure situations such as when a defender has to play the ball back to him. This is significant in terms of how Liverpool play because the goalkeeper can become a sweeper at times, an extra body to move the ball across the defence.

The goalkeeper is one of the most important players in the team because he sets the tone through the defence and has the ability to inspire the rest of the side through impressive saves which make teammates all the more determined to succeed.

It all depends on what Liverpool are going to do in relation to the future of Pepe Reina because while he’s there, McCarthy would be second choice and based on his last performance he deserves to be a lot more.

Should Liverpool go for him?
