Former Everton man Royston Drenthe ends year of hell with hat-trick

Drenthe

Royston Drenthe has finally had a moment to savour after leaving Everton.

The time between April 2012 and April 2013 has been pretty much a lost year in the career of former Dutch sensation Royston Drenthe.

This time last year he was publicly reprimanded by Everton boss David Moyes, who had become fed up with his ill-discipline.

In fact it was actually on April 15 2012 that it was reported that Moyes told him to stay away from the club, after he turned up to training one time too many.

As his Real Madrid contract expired, Everton also chose not to sign him permanently, and neither did anybody else last summer.

When the August 31 deadline passed, Drenthe remained a free agent, hoping somebody would take a chance on him.

September passed, no luck. October, similar story. November, still no takers.

And in December, he finally received good news in time for the festive season, with Russian Premier League newcomers Alania Vladikadvaz electing to take a chance on him.

It may have been a far cry from stepping out at the Bernabeu, but at this stage Drenthe really could not afford to be picky, and sealed the deal in January.

So far it has been slow going for him, before yesterday he had made just four appearances for Alania, seeing his side fail to win any of them, and him failing to trouble to scoresheet.

Yesterday, on April 15 2013, his luck may have finally changed for the better.

Alania hosted fellow strugglers Mordoviya, and ran out 3-1 winners. The scorer of all three goals? Royston Drenthe of course, with the first coming from the penalty spot.

He was also booked late on in the game as a mass brawl broke out; with Drenthe it's never simple, but he can certainly savour the moment.

There has not been much for him to shout about on the pitch in the past 12 months, so he will hope this is his turning point. A few more displays like this and who knows, Europe's big guns could decide he is worth the hassle after all.
