Manchester United weekend latest: Including Cabaye and Ferguson’s views on Falcao

Manchester United 3

All the news from Old Trafford this weekend…

Manchester United moved three points closer to the Premier League crown by defeating Stoke City 2-0 at the Britannia Stadium.

A fourth-minute goal from Michael Carrick and a 66th-minute penalty won and converted by Robin van Persie mean United need a maximum of seven points from their remaining six league games to secure the title.

In transfer news, Newcastle United’s Yohan Cabaye is rumoured to be back on Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar as a long-term replacement for Paul Scholes. At 27, the Frenchman has the creativity, goal-scoring ability and Premier League experience to be a success with the Red Devils. It could take a bid upwards of £20million to get him though.

Newcastle’s Europa League conquerors Benfica should also be priming themselves for a call from Old Trafford, with three of their players linked with United.

Along with long-term targets Ezequiel Garay and Nicolas Gaitan, former Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is now said to be high on Ferguson’s wanted list.

With the United manager having not signed an experienced central midfielder in more than six years, it seems almost certain he will do so this summer.

Whether that be Cabaye, Matic or someone else entirely is a mystery that will run for some time yet.

Following bookmakers in Spain slashing the odds of Radamel Falcao becoming a United player next season, Ferguson has dripped rather than poured water on the reports in an interview with the club's website.

Ferguson also dismissed Roberto Mancini’s claims that United’s opponents play with fear. He also took the time to question City and Chelsea’s plans to play additional friendlies directly after the season's end.

Two players linked with Old Trafford departures have prompted very different headlines this weekend.

Following rumours that Javier Hernandez may be used as a makeweight in any deal for Falcao, the Mexican has declared his desire to remain and fight for his place.

Nani, on the other hand, looks to be leaving with big-spending PSG his most likely destination.  With the summer arrival of Wilfried Zaha, and with the Portuguese winger entering the last year of his contract, it seems his time in Manchester is coming to an end.
