One reason why Liverpool signing Micah Richards doesn't make any sense

Why sign the Manchester City defender when they already have Andre Wisdom coming through the ranks?

Reports on Saturday claim that Liverpool will be looking to add to their already vast collection of young British talent by bringing in Manchester City defender Micah Richards in a rumoured £15 million deal.

The City and England defender had an excellent season for the Premier League champions last season but has spent almost the entirety of this season on the side-lines with a series of injury problems.

While undoubtedly highly talented the 24-year-old’s poor injury record has seen him restricted in recent years and rumours that Roberto Mancini is ready to send the Leeds-raised lad on his way this summer have heightened in recent weeks.

First of all there is the price that makes this a bad deal for Liverpool. £15 million for a player who spends most of his time nursing injuries would simply be financial suicide for a club who reportedly are not blessed with vast reserves of treasures to lure players to Anfield.

Secondly; haven’t Liverpool got a younger version of Richards already at the club? Begging the question if their money could be better spent elsewhere?

Because another Leeds lad will be looking for first-team football next season which makes Richards’ purchase unnecessary.

19-year-old defender Andre Wisdom stepped up into the first team with aplomb while Glen Johnson was asked to fill in for Jose Enrique at left-back and with Martin Kelly out injured.

The powerful defender impressed many with his assured and mature performances in the position; so much so he was rewarded with a new contract in January that commits the former Bradford youngster’s long-term future to the club.

While he, along with Suso and Raheem Sterling, has been used more sparingly in the latter stages of the season it has still been a breakthrough campaign for the England under-21 international.

He is of course more adept at centre-back then out on the flank and if Brendan Rodgers is serious about rearing the talent from the clubs youth academy paying an inflated price for an injury prone carbon copy of a teenager he already possesses would make absolutely no sense.

As good as Richards is the philosophy of Rodgers at Liverpool is better and unless that £15 million asking price drops pretty drastically; I just cannot see this one happening.

Would you want Micah Richards at Anfield next season?
