Manchester United have had to watch a few of their foreign youngsters head off to pastures new with success beckoning in recent years. The likes of Giussepe Rossi, Gerard Pique and Paul Pogba spring to mind.
Another such player has been Ron-Robert Zieler. Unable to usurp Ben Amos as the clubs reserve team keeper the young German returned to his homeland with Hannover as the second choice stopper behind Florian Fromlowitz.
He quickly showed his ability and became the number one custodian at the club reasonably quickly and eventually his form in the Bundesliga earned him a German call-up.
However things have not gone so well for him recently and against SC Freiburg last night things did not get any better.
First of all he came clutching at thin air after misjudging a cross in the first half. The misjudgement confused the flappable Christian Schulz behind him who diverted the ball into an empty net.
Hannover pulled themselves back in the game when Konstantin Rausch diverted another former Manchester United player, Mame Biram Diouf’s, cross into the back of the net.
Now while Zieler could do nothing about Champions League chasing Freiburg’s second goal of the game he would have been thoroughly disappointed with his handling for the third goal.
Jonathan Schmid fired in the ball on the half volley straight at the midrift of the stopper but he couldn’t get strong hands on the ball and it squirmed under his body as he tried to claw it out from the inevitable outcome.
It made some of David De Gea’s maligned performances look like Lev Yashin in pomp.
