Are Arsenal and Liverpool set to sign the wrong Swansea City centre-back this summer?

Swansea City Warm Up 2

Should Arsenal and Liverpool be chasing Ashley Williams? Or have they got the wrong target?

Swansea City centre back Ashley Williams has had an exemplary season at the heart of The Swans defence as the South Wales club consolidated their status as a Premier League club and booked a place in European football next season with victory over Bradford City in the League Cup Final.

He also usurped Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey as the captain of his national team under Chris Coleman; the cherry on the icing on the cake that has been his excellent season at the Liberty Stadium.

Of course such form has bred interest with Arsenal and Liverpool ready to go toe-to-toe for the £12 million rated 28-year-old.

Liverpool appear the early front-runners for his signature with the previous working relationship between Williams and Brendan Rodgers obviously benefitting such a deal. Williams is also a boyhood Reds fan and the chance to pull on that shirt and step out at Anfield may prove a lure nothing can match.

Arsenal on the other hand may have Champions League football to offer come the end of the season. The chance to play in the world’s premier football competition can be very hard to turn down.

So where should he go?

I answer with another question; who cares?

Because Williams is the wrong Swansea centre-back to go for this summer.

In my opinion there is little doubt that Chico Flores is the better of the pair and I even have him earmarked as a potential inductee into my Premier League team XI.

His composed play at the back has been one of the highlights of the season in my eyes and personally I feel he brings a lot more than his team-mate and partner.

Sure I get the need for a leader. Liverpool are losing Jamie Carragher in the summer and Arsenal have not had a sufficient defensive lead-out man since perhaps Tony Adams.

But for all those qualities one thing remains in my eyes; Flores is the better football player.

Not to mention the fact Williams turns 29 in the summer while Flores is just 26 giving the Spaniard the edge on longevity.

If Arsenal or Liverpool are going to look at Swansea City for a new centre-half then the fact is Williams is not the right man; Flores on the other hand might just be.

Who is better? Ashley Williams or Chico Flores?
