Should Manchester United break the bank to sign Raphael Varane?

Varane Madrid

Manchester United are being strongly linked with an unlikely move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, can they pull it off?

If they’re going to pull it off then it’s an issue which relies on plenty of things going in their favour and a lot of those will depend on luck because the club have him tied down on a contact until 2017.

He seems like one of the most exciting and talented central defenders in the world at the moment, which seems to be the main reason Real Madrid have given him plenty of chances to play on big occasions this season.

Firstly, United need the managerial situation at Real Madrid to go in their favour because Jose Mourinho will not let him leave while he’s in charge.

If the speculation surrounding Mourinho’s future is true then he could leave this summer, which means another boss coming in who may not want to use Varane so regularly in the first team.

That will be United’s first chance to make a move and get at Varane’s representatives, not to exploit him but to gauge whether he’s as happy under a new boss as he may seem under Mourinho.

United then need to be forceful in the respect that they are the first club to talk to him and sound out a possible deal.

Varane is a top quality player so make no mistake about the fact there could be over a dozen top sides interested in signing him if there is even the smallest indication that he could leave the Bernabeau.

For that to happen United need to have people in Madrid monitoring his every move, which is a big risk because that costs money and it’s pointless if Mourinho stays on for next season.

The next thing United need to go in their favour is getting a fee agreed because it’s going to be a whopper.

The length of his contract, the fact he’s a regular for Real Madrid and France and the fact he’s only 19-years-old means it could be a deal which goes close to the world record for a defender.

Sir Alex Ferguson has never been afraid to ask for big money deals from the powers that be at Old Trafford but there are plenty of other alternatives who would be cheaper and who would be easier to sign.

Once all of the above has happened and if everything has gone in United’s favour, they then need to convince Varane to move to Old Trafford.

They can pay him a competitive deal and they do offer him the chance to be closer to France, which are both things that will appeal to him, plus he’s had the experience of playing against United this season.

In that situation United would have to utilise their biggest asset and that is Ferguson who knows the answer to any possible question that Varane could come up with.

It would be one hell of a positive signing for United but it just seems like too big a challenge to pull it off because there are so many elements United need to go in their favour, which could go the other way.

Do you see it happening?
