Tottenham defender Michael Dawson confident ahead of Basel second leg

Tottenham Warm Up

Michael Dawson intends to draw inspiration from his own remarkable comeback as he looks to lead Tottenham past Basel and into a Europa League semi-final.

The captain was urged by his manager, André Villas-Boas, to seek a new club last August as he had slipped to fifth in the central defensive pecking order and Spurs accepted a £9m offer from QPR. But Dawson wanted to stay and fight; he regained his place towards the end of November and he is now eyeing a Europa League victory.

Tottenham could only draw 2-2 in the quarter-final first leg and Villas-Boas admitted they are "on the back foot", without the injured Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Jermain Defoe.

"You can never tell what's going to happen in football but, mostly, you get what you deserve," Dawson said. "So it's down to us and we're in a good position to go through, despite what some people think."

Probable teams

Basel (4-2-3-1): Sommer; P Degen, Schar, Dragovic, Park; F Frei, Cabral; Salah, Serey Die, Stocker; Streller.

Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Friedel; Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Naughton; Parker, Dembélé; Dempsey, Holtby, Sigurdsson; Adebayor.
