A 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford is clearly a great result for Manchester City whatever the situation in the Premier League is, but clearly next season they will be hoping to provide more of a challenge to their neighbours domestically, and finally make a serious mark on the Champions League as well.
With this in mind, they will likely pursue several high profile players this summer, and Mario Gotze is one name that might be mentioned again and again over the next few months.
The 20-year-old German has been superb for Dortmund over the past few seasons, and City experienced his talent first hand as they were dumped out in the group stage of this year's Champions League. After the late drama at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday night, Gotze and Dortmund are now in the semi-finals of that tournament, but could face losing a couple of key players at the end of the season despite their success.
Dortmund are reportedly planning to offer Gotze a new deal to remove the clause from his contract, and perhaps this has spurred Manchester City into action, with Txiki Begiristain apparently meeting with the midfielder's representatives to sound out his interest in a move.
If City are prepared to meet the €40million clause then it will come down to Gotze whether he would fancy a move to England, with previous comments from the Germany international suggesting he would be most attracted by Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona if he was to leave Dortmund.
Manchester City have the resources to make any player consider them however, and with Roberto Mancini recently bemoaning a lack of decisive action in the transfer market last summer, they might be planning to make Gotze the first new player of a major summer of activity at the Etihad.
How much would you like to see Mario Gotze in City blue?
