Erik Lamela could be on his way to the Etihad this summer if City and Roma can work out a deal.
Manchester City have been linked with plenty of different players over the last few weeks but few have been more exciting than Erik Lamela, one of the most highly rated attacking midfielders in Serie A.
News was surfacing that City were going to go after his teammate, Miralem Pjanic, but he has now ruled out a switch stating that he wants to stay with Roma for next season and beyond.
What that means is that if there was ever any official interest from City in Lamela, they can now double their efforts in making sure they are in the best position to get their man this summer.
It makes a possible deal for the 21-year-old more realistic because City have a sole target to focus on and not a complicated possible double swoop, which could have seen them miss out on both players had negotiations not gone well.
Another thing that City have going in their favour is the fact that Lamela is from Argentina. He may be very reluctant to move to any new side where he does not have a native Argentine-Spanish speaking teammate to help him settle in.
He has that at Roma in the form of defender Nicolas Burdisso and he would have that at City in the form of strikers Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, two of his national idols.
The performance of Yaya Toure in the Manchester derby suggested that Roberto Mancini could be urging Toure to go back to his Barcelona days, when he played a more defensive role in the team.
He did that role superbly, which means the club can go after attacking talent at the end of the season as they will more than likely have to tool up to wrestle the Premier League title back off of Manchester United.
Roma are blessed at the moment with impressive young players, who are in the team, playing well and making a name for themselves which is attracting the interest of some of the biggest clubs from other parts of Europe.
Not all of these clubs are fortunate to be in the same position as City in terms of the resources they can fall back on and what they can offer a young man like Lamela in terms of wealth and possible silverware.
Roma don’t look as though they are going to finish in the Champions League places in Serie A this season, with Inter Milan and Lazio above them battling Fiorentina for fourth position in the league.
Champions League football is definitely something City can use to their advantage because it’s the biggest platform that any professional player could wish to use to project himself more into the public eye.
Lamela has made just one appearance for Argentina since 2011 and there can be little doubt that impressive European performances alongside someone like David Silva, give him a very good chance of regaining an international place.
He seems like a superb little player and someone City can definitely snap up if he becomes available and if a deal can be agreed between all parties.
City fans, would you like to see him at the Etihad?
