One thing that’s getting talked about a lot, especially now, in the light of the defeat by the team from the blue side of Manchester, at Old Trafford no less – is whether this particular crop of United players deserve to win the title.
Mancini says they deserve it but wouldn’t be winning it if his own squad hadn’t had the injuries that they did, when they did.
It’s fair to say they were the better team on Monday night and that the team effort, the retention of possession, coupled with the individual brilliance of Aguero made it difficult to see how there could be so much daylight between these teams in the league.
Ferguson says that they deserve it because they’re one of the best teams he’s ever assembled, a lot of folk, me included don’t see this but then he’s closer to them than we are, they are winning the league by a comfortable margin so perhaps this is an acceptable argument.
Even before Christmas when they were conceding early goals all over the place they were picking themselves up, dusting themselves down and regaining composure to win those games, even those where it was a tough grind.
And I suppose that’s the key – a league isn’t about one match, a league is about a lot of matches, it’s about resilience, consistency, character, strength of spirit – it’s about a determination to win and exacting that determination out time and time again.
Do Manchester United deserve to win the league?
I think they do, they’ve ticked all those boxes. And to all those who say they wouldn’t have done it without Van Persie.
Well, he wasn’t able to win a Premier League title for Arsenal on his own. There’s no doubt he’s been a valuable addition to the squad, the goals he scored were valuable goals.
He has played a part, as have his teammates, regardless of how average they may appear at times.
Will they win number 21 next season?
The jury is well and truly out as I can’t see the same team generating the same points gap at any point of the season.
The United squad needs to grow, the younger players need to develop, quickly and they need to buy Gareth Bale and A N Other so that they can make a serious challenge for a treble (it was looking so good only a matter of weeks ago).
Ferguson and the fans won’t be satisfied with winning the title this year if it can’t be retained in the next.
What do you think? Do United deserve to win the title?
