Sergio Aguero v Gareth Bale - Who is the 'must have' player?

Bale Battles V Madrid

Real Madrid would love to sign either Sergio Aguero or Gareth Bale from Manchester City or Tottenham - But who would be a better fit for them?

When the summer transfer window comes to pass, what Real Madrid decide to do will have seismic effects on the rest of European football, and likely specifically the Premier League.

Firstly the situation which needs resolving is the issue of the manager, will Jose Mourinho stay or go? And who will replace him?

Then there are the potentially outgoing stars; Gonzalo Higuain is likely, while question marks remain over Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema, and even star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Madrid do sell one or more of their key men, it is very likely they will as ever look to add a new Galactico or two, with Malaga's Isco one of their key targets.

But according to numerous reports, priorities lie with top target Gareth Bale - or long-term aim Sergio Aguero.

Bale firstly has really come into his own over the past few months, with sensational form which has made him odds on to win one of the Premier League Player of the Year Awards.

Tottenham don't want to sell, and as a result figures of £60 million are being quoted for his signature, a quite substantial stumbling block to any transfer, and one which underlines his importance to Tottenham.

Sergio Aguero is a player Real wanted to sign years back when he was at Atletico Madrid, but the relationship between the rival clubs made a transfer impossible and he ended up at Manchester City instead.

Having spent two years at City, he remains their most effective striker, and would also command a huge fee in excess of the £37 million City paid for him.

Both City and Spurs are credited with interest in Madrid ace Gonzalo Higuain, and there is some suggestion that he could be used as a pawn by Real to try to sign either Aguero or Bale.

The question therefore is who they should target as a bigger priority?

Both are very different players, but equally high impact and would be assets to a side like Madrid. Bale is a winger who can play as a central attacking midfielder or even up front, but it is out wide where he is most effective.

Aguero is a striker who likes to drop deep and move into space, effective dribbling the ball and running at defenders as seen last night with his winner against Manchester United.

Bale has scored 22 goals and provided 13 assists this season, while Aguero has 14 goals and 5 assists, less impressive - but last season his tally of 30 goals and 12 assists outdid Bale's 13 goals and 17 assists.

In the entire period since Aguero has been in England, the Manchester City man has 44 goals and 17 assists - while Bale has 36 goals and 30 assists.

A combined goal contribution total of Aguero - 63 and Bale - 66.

But these are just the stats, which don't take into effect factors like age, Bale is a year younger at 23 than Aguero's 24, while Aguero is also a proven success in La Liga, whereas for Bale it would be new territory.

Clearly there are big obstacles in Madrid's path in terms of signing either of these players, but we are interested to hear your opinions on who they should target and who would be a better option to improve their team as they look to bounce back from Barcelona's inevitable La Liga crown which is all but confirmed.
