Now a marketing director at Ajax, Edwin van der Sar could soon be swapping his suit for goalkeeping gloves to help out his side on the pitch.
Van der Sar, a Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995 and then United in 2008 - is the subject of a potential SOS call by club manager and former teammate Frank de Boer.
The reason is quite simple, and it is that Ajax are currently experiencing somewhat of a goalkeeping crisis.
The news has been reported by Dutch daily newspaper De Telegraaf and would certainly be a momentous move, as Van der Sar is now 42-years-old.
Ajax's current number one Kenneth Vermeet is suspended for two matches, with third choice Mickey van der Hart out injured, they have just the inexperienced Jasper Cillessen to call on.
It may be a crisis Ajax could normally negotiate, but at this stage of the season - calling on Van der Sar is something the club are considering due to the importance of the upcoming matches.
Ajax lead the Eredivise at present, with a three point gap over both PSV and Vitesse, with Feyenoord one behind.
What they do not want is for their goalkeeping problems to derail their title push and allow their rivals back into the hunt and make the chase a lottery with a handful of games to go.
Van der Sar is an experienced head who could feature ahead of Cillessen or on the bench as cover in an emergency, and let's face it, he is not a bad option for the club to have.
He may have reservations about making such a move, but he is an Ajax man through and through and if asked by De Boer to help on a short-term basis it's unlikely he will be able to turn him down.
Van der Sar is yet to comment on the rumours, and if he did decide to put his gloves on again he would have to make a decision quickly with Ajax playing at the weekend.
If he does, he can be sure the whole world will be watching.
