Manchester United's young Swiss defender put in another impressive display for the under-21s tonight.
Manchester United's under-21s racked up another win, beating Southampton 1-0 thanks to a goal from highly rated teenager Jesse Lingard.
Summer signing Nick Powell featured, but the real star of the show was last January's signing from Manchester City, Frederic Veseli.
The 20-year-old Switzerland youth international has struggled to force a way in at centre-back in recent months, with Michele Fornasier and Tom Thorpe the preferred options, but he has equally been difficult to leave out.
Veseli has instead been picking up experience playing in a midfield holding role, making his last four outings in central midfield, but reverted to a right-back role for the visit of Southampton.
And the switch of positions did not disappoint, he linked up excellently on a number of occasions with right-winger Adnan Januzaj, both providing a threat from the flanks.
Veseli provided a gilted chance for Nick Powell early on with a clever backheel, although the Englishman's shot was blocked, and came close with a shot himself in the second half.
The right-back position is not a new one for Veseli, he has played there on a number of occasions this season, but he reinforced his quality and capability there.
Veseli was brought in as a centre-back, but with a plethora of options for United in the first team, and even in the under-21 side, with Wootton, Keane, Thorpe and Fornasier ahead of him, looking to progress his career in another position is a wise move if he wants to make it at United.
Both defensive midfield and right-back are positions United are not blessed in, in terms of quantity. They have quality in the first team, but if Michael Carrick and Rafael were to get injured then it could just cause problems for them.
So if Veseli can continue impressing, he may just earn a chance; he got match time on last year's pre-season tour and will fancy his chances of doing the same again.
At 20-years-old it is time he kicked on and this season has been good for his development. He is very much showing he is the club's ultimate youth utility man - a very useful player for reserve coach Warren Joyce to have at his disposal. Sir Alex Ferguson may just decide he needs a talent like that too.
Could Veseli be useful to United next season?
