How Chelsea’s Interest in Schurrle is Great News for Manchester United

Chelsea’s apparent interest in signing Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen is great news for Sir Alex Ferguson.

It’s great news because it takes some of the attention and focus away from another Bayer Leverkusen player United have had their eye on for months, Lars Bender.

Bender has been tipped as a possible replacement for Paul Scholes in the Manchester United midfield and there have been rumours surrounding a move to Old Trafford, since the early part of the season.

Chelsea are one of the only teams that can outmuscle United in a financial sense because of the wealth they have available, via their owner Roman Abramovich.

These Bayer Leverkusen targets are extremely good players so the German club are going to demand top money for any side that wants to come in and buy them, during the summer window.

Chelsea will likely have to come up with a very big offer for Schurrle, a similar player to bender, because Leverkusen have already stated they won’t be bullied into selling the 22-year-old to the West London club.

That means United could go in, unrivalled by another English club, for Bender who is one of the most exciting German players in the current crop at the moment.

He too would likely cost United a lot of money, but the point is Chelsea’s new boss is more than likely going to be unwilling to pay massive fees for effectively two of the same players, especially when they have Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata already in their midfield ranks.

The only other English club that could possibly outmuscle United in their pursuit for Bender is Manchester City, but there is no indication that City are looking to invest in midfield players at the moment.

They have the likes of superstar players in David Silva and Yaya Toure to fall back on with plenty of other options across the middle of the pitch, meaning it could be a waste of time for Bender to head to the blue half of Manchester.

United fans should be very excited about Chelsea’s interest in going after someone else because if it makes it easier for United to sign Bender, that is fantastic news for the Old Trafford side.

Bender has every skill or attribute in the book when it comes to being able to replicate the sort of effect that Scholes and Ryan Giggs have had at United and the fact they should have less competition for him means they have more power financially in the deal.

There could be other European sides interested in signing Bender should he become available but if United become the only English side in for him, then it becomes very easy for Bender to make that decision.

United fans, do you want to see Bender at the club? Would you rather Fergie went after Schurrle?
