Real Sociedad opened up a four point gap between them and Malaga in fifth place to strengthen their grip on Champions League football next season; with former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela one again playing a vital role.
The Mexican got the ball rolling in San Sebastian when he fired home after a scrappy goal-mouth scramble to give Txuri-Urdin a 1-0 lead in the fourth v fifth battle.
Sociedad romped into a 3-0 lead when goals from Alberto de la Bella and Tottenham transfer target Antoine Griezmann struck and after Pedro Morales gave them hope that was soon extinguished when Sociedad grabbed a fourth goal. In the end Manchester City loanee Roque Santa Cruz’s late goal proved nothing more than consolation.
With Malaga suspended from European competition next season after falling foul of the new Financial Fair Play regulations it now leaves the Basque side well clear of the chasing pack; and closing in on their first Champions League appearance since finishing runners-up in La Liga in 2002-03.
Now ten years on the side are four points ahead of Real Betis in sixth and looking likely to be rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of European football next season.
Here is the Vela goal from the game. Hardly one to remember but every one of his 12 league goals this season counts.
