Report: Chelsea and Liverpool target Jackson Martinez contract has 'loose ends'

The Porto striker has been in sensational form this season but could he be on his way to the Premier League this summer?

There is little doubt that Jackson Martinez is one of Europe’s most potent strikers this season. The Colombian has scored an impressive 31 goals in 34 games in his debut season in Portugal and such form has seen his immediate influence on the European game compared to that of his more illustrious compatriot Falcao; who himself started his continental adventure at the Dragao.

Such form was never going to go unnoticed and while it serves one purpose; as a sickening reminder of what might have been if Liverpool had not pulled out of a deal in 2012 it also has attracted the interest of several of Europe’s big teams.

Barcelona were quoted as having a ‘strong interest’ in the player last month while his agent Giovanni Fiore also confirmed interest from Atletico Madrid and a big Italian side; rumoured to be Inter Milan.

But English clubs are also rumoured to be interested in splashing the cash on the player; who won’t come cheap from the notoriously hard bargainers in Lisbon.

Liverpool have been linked once again along with Chelsea and Manchester United (although that later proved to be a mistranslation) for the talented 26-year-old who has a current contract until the end of the 2016 season.

However Porto have been trying in earnest to get a new contract drawn up for their talented forward but it has now been reported by O Jogo, a Portuguese football publication, that the there are difficulties with this new contract.

They say the deal is ‘not signed and has loose ends’ which include the ‘revision of the termination clause’ which is currently set at £34 million; a price they want to increase.

They say that the negotiations will now be put on halt until the end of the season which may just alert the big guns circling around this talismanic striker.
