The Benfica centre back has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks with some reports even claiming a deal is done. But Manchester United fans were not so sure after his performance against Newcastle United last night
Last night saw Newcastle United take on Benfica at The Stadium of Light in Lisbon with the hope of going some way to securing a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Things started well when Papiss Cisse gave the travelling Toon Army something to cheer about in the 19th minute when he gave the English side a lead. However goals from former Bolton Wanderers forward Rodrigo, Lima and Oscar Cardozo left Alan Pardew’s men with it all to do when they host Benfica at St James Park in the second leg.
The game also held significance for Manchester United fans who finally got the chance to run the rule over Argentine defender Ezequiel Garay in the game broadcast on ITV4.
United have been heavily linked with the former Real Madrid defender in recent weeks and this was the perfect opportunity for them to assess what they felt he might be able to bring to Old Trafford.
It is fair to say that opinion was mixed on the player. While many were impressed with his performance and in particular his passing ability from the back others pointed to his struggle to control Papiss Cisse as a worrying factor ahead of any potential transfer.
Here are some examples of what has been said on Twitter in regards to Garay making a move to Manchester United…
After that game before, wouldn't mind Garay at united, looks a very tidy player— Scottay - iSloth (@scottbowie_95) April 4, 2013
Sounds like Garay is trying to prove me right. Not good enough for united. We're well off with Vidic Smalling Evans Rio and jones.— Liam Whelan (@liam11) April 4, 2013
Garay is so overrated. If he's not good enough for Real Madrid then why is he good enough for United? He isn't— Benson Portlock (@BenPortlock) April 4, 2013
Cisse is killing garay. Have #united really signed this fella???— Paul Horsfall (@PaulJhorsfall) April 4, 2013
not seen anything from garay to make me want him at united— FM2013GAMER (@FM2013GAMER) April 4, 2013
Interestingly enough; Ezequiel Garay is being used as the sole playmaker for Benfica. Every attack starts with him from the back.— Mr Prolific (@mr360xx) April 4, 2013
What did you make of his performance? Is he good enough for United?
