7. 1976 - Billionaire Howard Hughes, one of the world's richest men, dies on a plane to Houston, Texas, having spent two decades in seclusion

8. 1986 - A bomb explodes in La Belle disco, Berlin, which is crowded with US servicemen, killing two and injuring over 100

9. 1988 - Alan Shearer makes his English Football league debut for Southampton against Arsenal - and scores a hat-trick
