A round-up of news and views relating to Tottenham Hotspur over the past 24 hours.
Jermain Defoe has been ruled out for three weeks after aggravating a muscle injury, and could miss both legs of the Europa League quarter-final tie with Basel. Defoe is likely to return for Manchester City’s visit to White Hart Lane on the 21st April. Sandro and Younes Kaboul are also both out, but Hugo Lloris is available even if Brad Friedel continues to be preferred in the Europa League.
Andre Villas-Boas has said that Spurs must be wary of Basel’s quality, and pointed to the Swiss side’s recent success in European competitions:
"They have got tremendous results in the past year with Man United and teams like Bayern - teams they have surprised. They are extremely successful and one of the best teams in the country.”
In transfer news, there have been reports that Roma will offer striker Pablo Osvaldo to Spurs this summer in a cut price deal. The Italian club have apparently lost patience with Osvaldo due to his disciplinary problems, and could let him leave for £8million at the end of the season, with Spurs desperate to add to their attacking options.
Zinedine Zidane’s quotes describing Gareth Bale as the player who has impressed him most in Europe this season have fuelled speculation about a Real Madrid bid for the player this summer. Real Madrid have persistently been linked to Bale, although Spurs have said they have no intention of letting him leave.
Brad Friedel has heaped praise on the Welsh forward, saying that Bale is as important for Spurs as Michael Jordan was for the Chicago Bulls.
Ahead of Everton’s trip to White Hart Lane this weekend Tim Howard has said that his team will need a little bit of luck to claim a Champions League place, but that if they can take points off their rivals themselves they still have a good chance.
Darron Gibson has also talked about the match, saying that it will take a collective effort from Everton’s players to limit the impact Gareth Bale can have on the game. However Gibson also said that Spurs have other talented players, and that the focus will not just be on the Welshman.
On HITC today, Lewis Doe suggests that Spurs should be wary of Barcelona’s hunt for a defender, with Jan Vertonghen a possible target this summer.
