Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested Luis Suarez could become a bigger Anfield figure than Steven Gerrard.
There are few players who embody Liverpool football club as much as Steven Gerrard has done but central defender Jamie Carragher is tipping Suarez to run him very close.
Suarez has been the stand out performer in a team that he has had to carry throughout matches this season, which has led to him creating a reputation for himself as one of the Premier League’s most prolific strikers.
It’s a little naïve to compare him to Gerrard at this stage of his Liverpool career because there have been so many moments in the past where Gerrard has spearheaded success and been a key figure driving the team forward.
They are two very different players and Suarez perhaps grabs more of the headlines for Liverpool because he’s the player getting on the end of many creative plays which are started by the Liverpool midfield.
There is also the issue of the future and possible transfers, which is intriguing to compare between the two players.
Gerrard had the chance to go to Chelsea at the very start of the Roman Abramovich era but turned his back on a move, staying with Liverpool and firing them towards Champions League glory.
Suarez cannot and will not become a Liverpool legend if he does what Gerrard avoided and turns his back on the club, which he’s already said he’s open to in order to play Champions League football.
Considering Liverpool are unlikely to get into the top four and considering the calibre of some of the sides interested in signing Suarez, it could be very difficult for him to turn down a potential move away from the club.
All the while Suarez stays at Liverpool and continues to score goals, he’s giving himself the best possible chance of having his name sung around the Kop long after he retires.
However, he cannot realistically be compared to Gerrard because Gerrard is a very unique player who may never be replaced at Liverpool. He has undergone various transitions of the team and various managers, always coming out with his reputation and integrity in tact.
Suarez could end up being one of Liverpool’s best ever players but so many external things have to happen in order for that to be possible, while Gerrard will probably have a statue of himself somewhere around Anfield, or whichever ground Liverpool are playing at in the future.
The difference between the pair is that Gerrard has been one of Liverpool’s best players for well over ten years while Suarez has had a brilliant, single season, which has stoked up excitement and erratic claims just like this one.
If someone dangles a multi-million pound carrot in front of Liverpool and Suarez in the next couple of seasons, do the fans trust Suarez not to bite, especially if Liverpool are still chasing the top four.
Liverpool fans, is Gerrard truly unique?
