Manchester United may have been unfortunate to go out of the Champions League and they may have produced their two worst performances against Chelsea in the FA Cup, but the main aim was always to dominate the Premier League.
It was the main aim because Sir Alex Ferguson and others at the club, would have been petrified that there was actually a shift taking place in the balance of power between themselves and Manchester City.
It was a big shock to United last season when City won the title, because there had always been that air that they would never quite manage to pull it off but they did thanks to literally the final kick of the season.
The financial power and the resources that City have at their disposal means that they do have the ability to sign the best players, improve each season and have a genuine chance to be at the top level of the game for decades.
Fortunately for United, Ferguson went out and addressed the area of the squad which needed attention while City seemed content with things and remained a similar side for this current campaign.
It’s the significance of United fighting back which is more important than anything else because it sends out that clear and decisive message to their neighbours that they’ll have to do much better, if they want to have success over a prolonged period.
They have taught City a clear and precise lesson over how to react to a major setback and it should be something that Roberto Mancini’s men learn from, because United will be more than happy to crush them over the next few seasons.
It would have naturally been a tremendous achievement for Ferguson and United, had they been able to pull off Champions League and FA Cup victories this season but the Premier League would have been at the very top of the ‘to win’ list.
It’s also arguable that winning the Premier League, one of the best and most competitive leagues in Europe, is a better achievement than winning the Champions League and certainly the FA Cup.
That’s because United have been the best team in England over a long period of time and have been putting figures in different columns, which have guaranteed them a similar set of numbers to Barcelona in La Liga and Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
It’s one of the best titles that United have won and will win because of what happened last season and the reputation and momentum that City were starting to build up.
They weren’t too far off the title last season but this runaway lead which the side has created has shown exactly what United are capable of, if they put their minds to it over a long period.
Expect more of the same because Ferguson will go out again this summer, re-build, maybe make one or two squad additions and they will be back in the fight for the league and everything else next year.
United fans, are you happy with just the Premier League title?
