A round- up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.
Petr Cech has said that Chelsea are feeling confident ahead of their FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City, having overcome Manchester United in their quarter final replay on Monday. Cech played a major part in the victory, making one stunning stop in particular from a Javier Hernandez header, and the Czech player said other goalkeepers had texted him after the match:
“It was an important moment in the game, I’m sure a lot of people could already see the ball in the goal, so I was glad I got enough on it to push it over.
‘I got a few messages from other players and keepers, it’s great that people can appreciate the save.”
Demba Ba’s goal proved the winner on Monday, and the Senegalese striker has said he is desperate to win both the FA Cup and the Europa League with Chelsea this season, having never won a trophy before in his career.
The win over Manchester United came at a cost, with Ashley Cole coming off injured during the first half and Ray Wilkins has accused Rafa Benitez of causing the injury by not playing Cole during the weekend’s match with Southampton:
“I honestly feel he has to play all the time, Ashley. He is one of these machines. You have to keep it well oiled and it will fly. Had he played on Saturday, he wouldn't have done that [on Monday].”
Thibaut Courtois has said that he is still unsure about his future, and that despite suggesting he would know more around the start of April, Chelsea might now not decide whether he will spend another season on loan until a new manager is appointed at Stamford Bridge.
There are also doubts about the future of Romelu Lukaku, who is reportedly keen to move out on loan next season, but perhaps not with West Bromwich Albion. Lukaku apparently wants to pay for a team who are in Europe in an attempt to solidify his place in the Belgian national side.
On HITC today, Lewis Doe argues that Wilfried Bony would not be a good signing for Chelsea and we also look at what Jose Mourinho could bring to the Blues if he was appointed in the summer.
