The Dutchman replaced Patrice Evra in the line-up at The Stadium Of Light and suitably impressed fans ... and Rio Ferdinand.
Manchester United opened up an 18-point lead ahead of Manchester City’s game against Newcastle United and judging by the fact I can currently hear the mumbled tones of Paul Merson saying ‘it’s all Man City, Jeff’ I assume that will only be until around six o’clock tonight.
The new point gap however came from the victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in what was a scrappy affair.
The goal came via a Robin Van Persie strike that took a couple of detours via Phil Bardsley and Titus Bramble to sink The Black Cats despite a spirited performance from the team.
United had little to shout about after a tough day at the office other than their three points but one player did come out of the game with high praise.
Sir Alex rested several players ahead of the FA Cup tie with Chelsea on Easter Monday and the Dutchman was one such player to benefit from the rotation policy.
He replaced Patrice Evra at left-back and again, as he has whenever given the chance in the first team, he impressed with his swashbuckling full-back style.
He had two good opportunities on goal including a right foot strike that forced a save from his Benelux counterpart Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal.
His performance did not go unnoticed on Twitter where several Manchester United fans made their appreciation clear…

Another huge 3 points. Carrick majestic, positive display from Buttner, hard-working performance from RvP...professional display all round.— Gemma Thompson (@gem7thompson) March 30, 2013
Have to say Buttner was great today. He could be misunderstood for being a winger!— Stephen... (@ShadeMUFC) March 30, 2013

Buttner was nice today but Carrick was standout for me. Nice 3points that now roll on monday!— Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) March 30, 2013
Can Buttner challenge Patrice Evra for the left-back slot?
