Transfer rumour dissection: Featuring Begovic, Jovetic, and Gervinho

The validity of reports concerning targets for Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Manchester City and West Ham are assessed by Andi Foster.

As the business end of the season approaches, transfer rumours (no matter how ludicrous or laughable) start to swell.

The BBC gossip column continues to grow each day and an increasing number of football fans find themselves keeping an eye on twitter desperately hoping for a clue as to their club’s summer transfer business (whilst frequently pressing alt + tab to NewsNow whilst their boss isn’t looking). So to make life easier for you all – I thought I’d sift through some of the big rumours from the last week and talk you through my views on each one.

Jovetic to Arsenal / Man City

I’m 90 per cent sure that Jovetic will be leaving Fiorentina this summer and the hints suggest that it could well be to the Premier League. Interestingly though - City’s interest could well depend on how potential / rumoured moves for Radamel Falcao and Edison Cavani turn out. Don’t discount Arsenal (there is genuine interest - with one agent claiming Jovetic is up for a switch to the Gunners) – but the moment City do get involved Arsenal won't be anymore.

Wilfried Bony to Fulham / West Ham

Bony is top scorer in the Netherlands this season (Can anyone else remember a story like this going wrong in the past?) and supposedly Fulham and West Ham are interested in bringing the player (who has drawn comparisons to Drogba) to Blighty. That’s fair enough - I’ve got no problem with that.

But with the price being talked about (£14m) they are going to have to act pretty sharpish to secure his signature before other clubs start taking an interest, a report this morning already claims Chelsea are moving on him. He also strikes me as a fairly ambitious chap - so a good season could well see him heading for the exit door anyway.

Instead (with safety pretty much secured for both clubs) expect these two to be keeping an eye on the strikeforces of the relegated clubs or on the clubs that miss out on promotion (Glenn Murray is an obvious mention here)….

Begovic to Man Utd

Now this is the move that could kick start a goalkeeping merry go round involving a number of the biggest clubs in Europe and, err, Stoke.

Butland goes to Stoke to be number 1. Begovic wants to be number 1 – but wont go to United if he isn’t going to be number 1. So De Gea chips off to Barcelona to replace Valdes whilst Begovic takes the 1 shirt at Old Trafford. Valdes then shows up at an Italian or minted French club who then ship off one of their keepers to……… get the idea. Begovic to United is completely and utterly possible – but it won’t happen if De Gea is still at the club.

Mourinho back to Chelsea

Whilst a lot of the tabloids are already suggesting that the deal has been done – a quick investigation shows that none of the reports have listed sources (two of the reports actually list each other as sources) or contain any quotes aside from the infamous Mourinho interview from earlier this week.

It could happen and in truth I’d love for it to go through (if for no other reason than to continue the comedy show that is Abramovich and his managerial revolving door). Chelsea were a much stronger club with Mourinho at the helm and I’d expect them to return to title fighting strength very soon with Jose conducting their press conferences again (N.B…..I reserve the right to roll over with laughter if Benitez gets the job on a full time basis).

Gervinho to Galatasaray

You have no idea how much I want this to be true. But when was the last time that Arsenal found it easy to shift one of their flops (and for a profit as well). The original article doesn’t help either as vague doesn’t even describe it. Arsenal will listen to offers for the Ivory Coast forward in the summer – but if they get anywhere close to that price it needs to be classed as robbery. There are Arsenal flops and then there is Gervinho. Yes. He has his own category.

Which of the above do you expect to go through?
