Why Manchester City must copy their main rivals

Pablo Zabaleta Giant Flag

Pablo Zabaleta is perfectly right when he says City have to become exactly like Manchester United.

It seems ironic doesn’t it? Especially when City fans everywhere love their success a little bit more for the very fact they are not Manchester United and they have been able to stick it to their local rivals.

However, the club’s title defence this season has been abysmal and that is something they will have to address over the next few years, if they are to fight back and secure another league title in the current era.

What Zabaleta seems to be getting at is the mentality that United have when they are winning and how they focus on eradicating obvious errors from their game on a weekly basis.

The winning mentality is very important because it keeps everyone driven and if you’re a City fan, like it or not, that difference in mentality is what has allowed United to create a 15 point gap in the race for the title this season.

That mentality is also what drives the players on the field to demand the very best from each other constantly.

There have been plenty of examples this season of United players losing their cool because of a mistake a teammate has made, which hasn’t even led to the loss of a game.

The best example of this is the way David De Gea was immediately treated following the mistake he made which cost United a win away at Tottenham Hotspur. That is definitely something City can take to heart.

That ability to force out errors, close gaps and strengthen weaknesses is also something which Roberto Mancini has to focus on this summer.

United lost the title last season thanks to a few goals in the goal difference column. How did they react? Sir Alex Ferguson made sure they signed Robin Van Persie ahead of anyone else.

City have to take the same sort of approach. That means reviewing the squad, getting rid of any weak players or players who don’t want to be there and then replacing them with the quality the team and club has come to deserve.

If City want a spell of prolonged and continuing success at the top of the English game then United are the perfect example of how that’s achievable and the best thing for City fans is that it’s United who will suffer in the process.

Do City need to be more like United?
