There are so many things wrong with the rumours suggesting Christian Eriksen will sign for Chelsea, that I’m not really sure where to start.
This is a player who has been linked with a high profile Premier League move for pretty much the whole season. His name has stayed in the rumour mill ever since he rejected a new contract offer from the Dutch club.
To suggest he could go to Chelsea is extremely flawed. It’s flawed because to begin with, they don’t need him. They are blessed with midfield talent in Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard which means there is no need to make any more additions to the midfield.
Add to that the fact that Kevin De Bruyne has been playing out of his skin on loan in the Bundesliga. He’s likely to return at the end of the season and when the new boss is appointed at Stamford Bridge, they would be pretty naïve not to give him a chance in the first team.
You also need to look at how hard Chelsea would be willing to fight for this player, against the other sides linked with an interest; Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.
Both of those teams have a more pressing need to draft Eriksen into their squads, which makes it pointless for Chelsea to get involved in a bidding war against either, for a player that they don’t really need.
Why would they spend well over the £10 million mark for the sort of player they already own and can easily cope without?
Chelsea need to be looking to spend their cash in other areas where a new player is more important. The attack is the perfect example because if Chelsea are going to fight on all fronts next season, they need a powerful centre forward who can guarantee them goals.
Add to the mix the appointment of the new manager and if rumours are to be believed, that could well be Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho will have ideas and plans, as would any new boss, so it seems pointless for the club to move into position for a player like Eriksen right now, when any new boss may not have any interest in signing him whatsoever.
It’s the rumour mill going mad, nothing more and nothing less, if Chelsea do sign Eriksen at the end of the summer then he’ll just go into the squad, won’t play and they’ll sell him on after just one season.
Chelsea fans, do you need him?
