Martin Skrtel has not been enjoying the same success this season which saw him hailed as one of the Premier League's best, last campaign.
Shaky performances have seen him dropped by Brendan Rodgers and replaced by Jamie Carragher, and the fact he was recalled for the recent match against Southampton, which Liverpool lost 3-1 has not helped.
Last summer he was linked with a £25 million move to Manchester City, and with hindsight it appears the Reds really should have considered cashing in.
Rumours circulated in early February while the Russian transfer window remained open that he could become a target for Zenit St Petersburg, and talk from the same country has now touted him as a defender for Arsenal.
Russian newspaper Izvestia has claimed today that Arsenal are interested in Martin Skrtel, and are one of three possible destinations for the centre-back if he elects to leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
The other two teams interested are Zenit, and fellow Russian side Anzhi Machachkala, who are searching for a central defender to replace Christopher Samba who they sold to QPR.
The interest in Skrtel from Russia is not new, but talk of Arsenal going in for him is.
It is not a secret that Arsenal are likely to push to sign a new central defender, with Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci to be moved on this summer.
The big question mark hovers over the future of Thomas Vermaelen, an outstanding performer last season, but a problematic one this.
It is only really likely that Arsenal would move for Skrtel if they decided to cash in on Vermaelen themselves, and the benefits of such a move are debatable with both defenders enduring difficult seasons.
Skrtel is likely valued at around £15 million, and while he currently insists he is happy at Liverpool, a decision is expected to be made on his future at the end of the season, with manager Brendan Rodgers likely needed to sell a couple of players to boost his transfer funds.
So this one is not a sure thing by any means, and it may not amount to anything, but it could well be one to watch going forward.
Arsenal fans, is Vermaelen out and Skrtel in a good move? How would Liverpool fans feel about selling him to the Gunners?
